Grid-Ready Homes: Home Energy Insights, Assets, & Bundles

As US homes adopt more electric appliances, distributed energy resources, and EV charging, the relationship between households and the grid is becoming increasingly dynamic. Smart home technologies and connected energy assets create new opportunities to coordinate demand, optimize consumption, and strengthen resilience at the grid edge, enabling both consumers and energy providers to benefit: households gain more control over energy costs and comfort, while utilities enhance demand response, load flexibility, and renewable integration.

This research examines U.S. households’ engagement with grid-ready energy solutions and bundled offerings. It explores familiarity, adoption, and satisfaction with energy-efficient equipment, energy programs, EV charging, solar, storage, and demand response. The survey also assesses consumer attitudes toward managing energy through smart devices, AI-driven services, and bundled programs, identifying key barriers and motivators shaping the path toward broader adoption of energy innovations.

Key Questions Addressed:
  • How do households perceive and manage their energy costs?
  • What insights do consumers desire about their energy consumption and what market players do they most prefer to receive insights from?
  • What is the level of familiarity and participation in energy programs like time-of-use tariffs, and demand response programs?
  • What motivates or hinders participation in demand response programs, and what is the experience for participants?
  • What is adoption of major energy equipment like solar, smart electric panels, and home battery storage?
  • What bundles can be offered by smart home companies and energy providers to entice customers to adopt smart, energy-efficient appliances and devices and enroll in energy programs?
  • What are consumers' preferences for energy storage use cases, including back-up for outages, calling on batteries when rates are high, and coordinating battery use with EV charging?
  • What are the drivers for electric vehicle (EV) adoption and home charging solutions, and what are consumers’ charger installation preferences?
  • How can AI be leveraged in the technologies
