Game consoles and tablets are the most popular CE gifts for family members in 2013 holiday season

Parks Associates to discuss New CE Research at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES

Parks Associates research finds gaming consoles and tablets are the most popular CE gift purchases for family members this holiday season. 2013 Holiday CE Purchase Intentions, which features a 4Q 2013 survey of U.S. broadband households, shows 47% of game-console shoppers and 45% of tablet shoppers plan to buy these products as gifts for a household member.

The research firm will host CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES on January 7, 2014, in Las Vegas, to discuss business strategies to leverage and monetize the expanding population of connected devices in the home. The session "New Connected CE Business Models" features executives from Accedo, Delivery Agent, Qualcomm Atheros, Roku, and Sling Media.

"Before the economic downturn, more consumers were buying these devices as outside gifts, but following the Great Recession, CE shoppers now like to keep these gifts close to home," said John Barrett, director, Consumer Analytics, Parks Associates. "Tablets and game consoles are two of the top-three CE gifts this holiday season, but only 14-15% of the shoppers for these devices are gifting them to people outside the household. Over 75% of the gift purchases for these devices are for a family member in the household."

Parks Associates research finds 24% of tablet and game-console shoppers in 2010 intended these purchases as out-of-household gifts. By 2011, 10% of tablet shoppers and 12% of console shoppers planned these as out-of-household gifts.

  • The top-three CE gifts for the 2013 holiday season are game consoles, MP3 players, and tablets.
  • Smartphones are the second most popular CE product this holiday season, but only 45% of these shoppers plan to give the device as a gift.
  • Laptops are eighth and desktops are sixteenth on the list of popular CE gift purchases.

CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES features a great variety of company leaders in the connected home industries who will address these trends in connected CE content and the smart home plus the trends we will see in 2014,” Barrett said.
