Parks Associates, in partnership with InterDigital, examines how High Dynamic Range (HDR) is transforming content creation, distribution, and consumption. By delivering brighter highlights, deeper contrast, richer colors, and more lifelike images, HDR is becoming a foundational technology across streaming, live sports, gaming, and mobile entertainment. For studios, streaming platforms, and device manufacturers, HDR creates new opportunities to differentiate premium offerings and enhance the consumer experience.
Despite growing adoption, challenges remain. Parks Associates research finds that only 27% of consumers have “some familiarity” with HDR, highlighting a significant opportunity for the industry to better communicate its benefits. Fragmentation across competing HDR standards, production costs, and interoperability challenges also create barriers to widespread adoption. However, advances in artificial intelligence, cloud-based production, and next-generation video codecs are reducing complexity and making HDR more accessible across the entertainment ecosystem.
As HDR becomes standard across televisions, streaming devices, and leading entertainment platforms, the industry is shifting from whether to support HDR to how to maximize its value. Greater collaboration among content creators, streaming providers, broadcasters, and technology companies will be essential to delivering consistent, high-quality viewing experiences. The future of premium video will be defined not simply by more pixels, but by better pixels. HDR is positioned to become an expected part of the entertainment experience, creating new opportunities for innovation, differentiation, and growth.
