Almost 40% of U.S. households use on-demand streaming services for sports, events

A new Parks Associates report says 39% of U.S. Internet households watch live events or sports through an on-demand streaming service. The firm says that the finding illustrates the expanded role of such services.

The report, “The New Live TV Mode: Skinny Bundles, Sports, News,” also found that a quarter of these homes watch live video through free ad-supported television (FAST) services and that 21% say they don’t watch live video at all.

“Consumers value live content but struggle to find and access it,” Michael Goodman, director of entertainment research for Parks Associates, said in a press release about the on-demand streaming report. “The challenge for providers is making live content accessible. Sports is a good example, with programming now distributed across multiple services and platforms.”

Another recent survey released by Parks Associates found that 51% of US households favored a combined live TV and streaming package. Of these, 27% said that they favored live-TV paired with on-demand streaming. Slightly less — 27% — favored a “skinny” bundle paired with streaming services. A skinny bundle refers to a limited set of core channels.
