ADT announced it has acquired Origin AI (Origin Wireless, Inc.), integrating its AI-based home sensing platform and related intellectual property into ADT’s ecosystem for $170 million in cash. Origin’s technology detects and classifies motion, presence and occupancy without cameras, audio, or wearables and comes with more than 200 global patents. ADT plans to use this capability to deepen understanding of in-home activity, support new safety and smart home use cases, reduce false alarms, and improve coordination with responders. The company expects to begin commercializing solutions built on Origin’s AI sensing in 2027.

ADT’s acquisition of Origin AI marks a pivotal shift in the trajectory of Wi-Fi sensing. Origin AI has traditionally been embedded in ISP partnerships. By bringing this technology in-house, ADT gains exclusive control over a capability ISPs have used to differentiate broadband services and introduce whole-home awareness features. The move forces ISPs to reassess their sensing strategies and potential partnerships.

It also advances the industry toward ambient intelligence, positioning ADT to deliver continuous, context-aware insights beyond traditional monitoring. Consumers also expect next-gen security capabilities. Sixty-three percent of security system owners find it appealing for their systems to use information the system captures, plus AI, to understand and confirm emergencies – nearly as many as are interested in using camera feeds.

However, the question remains whether ADT can leverage Wi-Fi sensing as an added revenue layer. For ADT, the acquisition secures in-house relevance in the AI-driven competitive landscape. Amazon continues to push AI across its ecosystem, and Alarm.com is already ahead in deploying AI-driven contextual services. ADT’s prior advantage through its Google partnership has also been diluted—AT&T’s new services are now “powered by Google,” as are Walmart’s cameras, reducing differentiation. Viewed through this lens, ADT is positioning itself for long-term competitiveness.
