In the recent keynote segment of the March 5 Smart Energy Summit, Parks Associates connected the evolution of the smart home with the next wave of energy management.
Energy is now one of the top reasons consumers coordinate smart home devices, second only to security. That makes energy a major value layer in the connected home, especially as utilities seek new ways to manage peak demand and tap into residential assets.

The session explored how orchestration across devices, platforms, and systems is becoming increasingly important. Rather than relying on single devices operating in isolation, the future lies in intelligent, coordinated home energy management that optimizes HVAC systems, storage, EV charging, smart appliances, and more.
This is where AI, automation, interoperability, and data sharing begin to matter most.
Parks Associates research presented during the session showed that many smart home device owners are willing to share energy usage data between devices. That willingness opens the door for more intelligent automation, stronger demand flexibility, and better consumer experiences. The Parks Associates team also highlighted the importance of interoperability standards and communication protocols, including technologies and frameworks that enable devices, utilities, and third-party platforms to work together more effectively.
As one of the session’s core messages made clear, orchestration depends on interoperability. The better systems communicate, the more value they can unlock for both households and the grid.
Register for the Smart Energy Summit next session on August 20.
