Though nearly 10% of U.S. broadband households currently own some type of smart home device, over 60% are unfamiliar with these products or services, including which companies sell them or where to buy them.

This research was revealed in a joint Parks Associates-CEA industry whitepaper, "Smart Home Ecosystem: IoT and Consumers," which compiles the results of a Q2, 10,000-broadband household survey.

Low familiarity with smart home brands and products is the number one cause for low adoption, according to the whitepaper. Parks Associates and CEA recommend companies create educational marketing campaigns to raise awareness and open new consumer channels for acquiring smart home solutions to increase market adoption. Additional startegies and market opportunities are outlined throughout the 16-page published study.

Additional research highlights from the whitepaper include:

  • Total smart home device ownership in U.S. broadband households
  • Market drivers and inhibitors for smart home device/system adoption
  • Total time spent shopping for smart home devices
  • Profiles and segments of today's smart home device buyers
