Mike Fisher, Director, Strategy & Innovation for BrightLine, responds to industry questions concerning connected entertainment and changing viewer behaviors:

What is the most important next step to engage consumers in smart home solutions, connected entertainment services, and/or value-added services like tech support and connected health?

2014 was the year that everything fell into place when it comes to engaging consumers through connected entertainment. With alternative content distribution taking a leap forward, both in-terms of the quality of content, and the availability to access content, viewers are closer than ever to having the ‘what-I-want, where-I-want, when-I-want’ content consumption model.

What is the biggest driver for the connected consumer market?

Good content and advanced device platforms are key to driving the consumer market in a way that gets viewers changing their behavior. There need to be many compelling reasons to get viewers to seek out more apps on their connected TVs and OTT devices if the ‘appification' of TV is going to reach critical mass.

What are the most important initiatives your company is taking in 2015?

Refining our creative build tools to allow publishers to white-label our services, and working directly with publishers to help them plan long-term connected TV monetization paths which take advantage of the scale of TV and the measurability of digital—both on the economic side, and the viewer behavior side.

Mike Fisher will be speaking at the “Consumer Demand for Next-Gen TV Services” session at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES in Las Vegas, NV, January 6, 2015. Other panel speakers include representatives from Cisco, DivX, Gracenote, ThinkAnalytics, and Verizon.
