Roku dominates streaming devices, but Chromecast overtakes Apple TV, report says

In the first three quarters of 2014, 10 percent of U.S. households equipped with broadband bought streaming-media devices, according to a new report by market research firm Parks Associates.

The firm said Tuesday that while Roku's lineup of set-top boxes and streaming sticks remained the leading brand with 29 percent of global sales in the first nine months of 2014, Google Inc.'s Chromecast had a share of 20 percent and Apple Inc.'s Apple TV took 17 percent of the market.

Streaming-media players let users access arrays of channels and services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video, according to CNET.

Parks Associates reported that in the sales of streaming-media players so far this year match the total at year-end last year.
