NEST and Belkin are making smart grid IoT a reality through smart home products that help homeowners manage energy use. Early adaptors are now curious as to what the next IoT product will be and how it will benefit consumers. According to industry leaders, it will be smart transportation.
The connected car can deliver media content and request roadside assistance automatically, but smart transportation will have more potential to benefit the consumer. Through IoT, smart transportation could allow cars to communicate with each other, drive themselves, improve fuel efficiency, and automatically direct traffic to the most time effective route.
While the smart home and smart transportation can benefit the consumer through improved resource management, they cannot exist without security. If smart homes could be controlled by nonresidents around the world, then the technology would be abandoned. Similarly, smart transportation needs security in order for a trusted transportation system to grow. The technology to secure the smart grid, smart homes, and smart transportation exists. The next leader of IoT must embrace it to make the future secure.
