Netflix and Dreamworks Animation have announced a multiyear agreement wherein Netflix will run original series created by Dreamworks. The deal, Netflix says, is its biggest ever for original first-run content and will provide more than 300 hours of new programming.
The move comes as part of an enterprise by Netflix to increase its appeal to children and its desire to provide an increased amount of original programming. The move, on the part of Dreamworks, is a part of the company's major initiative to increase its television production and distribution worldwide.
The first of the Dreamworks series to air on Netflix is expected in 2014 and will be available in the 40 countries in which Netflix operates. Content for the series will be inspired by box office Dreamworks hits such as 'Shrek' and 'Kung Fu Panda.'
Both companies stock prices rose after the announcement of the agreement.
