Broadband and category service providers are ramping up to offer home services across IP platforms. The first target applications relate to security-at-home via cameras and intrusion alerts; several providers, including Verizon, Comcast, and Rogers in North America and BT in Europe, have announced initiatives. These providers join ADT Security in offering IP services to extend or substitute for traditional professional security services.

While security services, known and understood by most householders, are the first target areas, a core benefit of IP platforms for both providers and their customers over traditional static services includes their capacity to append additional, more nontraditional services of value over time or as desired. Examples include energy, home and health monitoring, home control, and alert systems for at-risk family members.

IP-based services can also connect consumers so that they can access their home services on smartphones, tablets, PCs, or any IP-connected device both in and outside the home. The net effect is to provide the consumer with more options for when and where information and alerts are delivered.
Concurrently, the service provider has new ways to monetize its IP backbone and deepen relationships with subscribers.
