Google, a company known for pushing past its web-search roots into the technology industry with smartphones and self-driving cars, has now made a move into the smart home market. The company recently announced that it will buy Nest Labs, the creator of the Learning Thermostat.
Nest’s thermostat is unique because it learns a user’s behavior to automatically adjust over time and can be programmed by a user’s smartphone. The device helps users save energy while giving them more control over their home. With this acquisition, Google will be able to collect energy use data directly from the consumer and, as a result, quickly become a leader in home energy management.
Erik Charlton, VP of Business, Nest, will present the luncheon keynote on Tuesday, February 18, at the Smart Energy Summit. During his presentation, Charlton will address the impact of connected appliances and thermostats on energy management.
