Ottawa's Energate, a residential demand response and home energy management provider, and Ontario's Energy Ministry are joining forces on a $5.8 million demonstration project to evaluate state-of-the-art solutions enabling consumers to manage and control their home energy usage.
Energate will partner with local companies to experiment with new approaches that will make their distribution grid more efficient. In addition to smart thermostats, mobile smartphone applications, energy dashboards and web portals, the Consumer Engagement for the Smart Grid demonstration will build on Energate's Consumer-Connected Demand Response platform that is being deployed in parts of the province.
Participants using Energate’s technology in pilots reduced their coincident peak demand by 50 percent and in some cases reduced their overall monthly bill by up to 30 percent.
