Dish recently announced it would open up the API for its Hopper multiroom DVR system to select developers of mobile apps. The company is integrating with three home control system companies: Control4, Crestron, and Savant.
Previously, Dish did not allow two-way integration with third-party systems; as a result, integrators had to add Dish into their systems using IR. With the now open API, consumers have access to the full capabilities of the Hopper and can integrate its services with a complete home system.
The complete Hopper feature set is available through a Control4 interface, with thermostat and lighting controls. Consumers will be able to press the blue button on the Control4 touchpad or iPad app and access all the apps available through Dish.
Control4 can show Dish customers what is playing on any given TV in the house, as well as the status of the lights and temperature in those rooms. Therefore, a user could program a system to close the shades when a movie is selected, or react in another way based on rich data delivered through Dish.
