Comcast has begun rolling out its Xfinity Home Security service in the Nashua area and most of southern New Hampshire. It is part of a move by telecoms and cable firms into the new but promising industry of “smart home” management, as a way to help balance stagnation in their core businesses.
The service uses a wireless modem in your house and a variety of devices, such as interactive smoke alarms, door and window sensors, a “breaking glass” detector, and Web cameras providing live video feed, creating a home-security service that can be controlled via computer or iPhone.
Time Warner, announced a similar service earlier this month. Both systems are based on software and systems developed by a startup called iControl Networks, which is partly owned by Comcast.
And Verizon Wireless is testing a similar service via its new 4G network, using a company called 4Home.
