In September, Apple will launch a new program that will allow customers to trade in their used iPhones for a new one. The program is already being tested in select Apple Stores, and some are processing multiple trade-ins every day.

In each trade, a customer needs to bring a working, non-liquid damaged iPhone to an Apple Store where it can be evaluated. The value of the old phone can rage depending on color, physical damage and water damage. The value range for an iPhone 4 and 4S is around $120-200 for 16GB, and a 16GB iPhone 5 in good condition could go for $250. Once the value is established, it is applied to a gift card that is then applied to the purchase of a new iPhone. If there is any money left over, the customer can keep the card. However, the trade-in program is only valid if you’re buying a new phone therefore, you can’t just trade it for a gift card.
