Fight over ultrawideband standards turns into morass"

USA Today UWB remains lost in a black hole known as standard-setting, the process by which the industry agrees on a common standard so devices from different makers work with each other. For nearly a year, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has been locked in a debate over which of two technologies should be the standard for UWB.

One reason the battle is so bitter: The market for UWB chips and gear should top $1 billion by 2008, says Parks Associates analyst Kurt Scherf. "Whoever wins is going to control high-speed communications within the home," says analyst Kirsten West of West Technology Research Solutions.
