Parks: Millennials Covet OTT Video — And Pay-TV

Parks said nearly 60% of OTT video services in North America are subscription-based. About 64% of U.S. broadband households subscribe to an OTT video service, up from 59% in 2015. Average monthly spending on SVOD services among U.S. broadband households increased from $3.71 per month in 2012 to $6.19 per month in 2015.

HBO Launching Streaming Service in Spain With Vodafone

Partnering with British-based telecom Vodafone, which claims 400 million subscribers in 30 countries globally, including 1 million TV subs in Spain, affords HBO an existing distribution channel. Spain, whose unemployment levels rank among the highest in the European Union, also has one of the highest percentages of broadband-only households — and piracy, according to Parks Associates.

The latter could be an issue says Parks analyst Brett Sappington.

Analyst Says Upcoming Netflix Price Hike To Increase Churn

Netflix does not disclose churn, which represents the percentage of subscribers who discontinue service within a quarter. The subscription streaming pioneer’s churn was pegged around 9% last August by Parks Associates — lower than Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime Video.

Parks: U.S. Tops in Cord-Cutting — Except for Spain

Parks said Spain actually exceeds the U.S. in percentage of cord-cutters and broadband households that watch online video, but in the other countries — the U.K., France and Germany — the incidence of cord cutting is far lower than in the U.S.

In the past 12 months, 4% of U.S. broadband households have canceled their Netflix service, representing nearly 9% of Netflix’s current 42 million domestic subscriber base. By comparison, 7% have canceled their Hulu Plus subscription within the past 12 months, a figure that represents approximately one-half of Hulu Plus’s current 9 million sub base, according to Parks Associates.

Streaming Wars: The OTT Force Awakens

Parks: Pricing, Limited Content Stymie Wider 4KTV Adoption

With the fourth quarter and holidays integral to television sales, new data from Parks Associates says 42% of domestic broadband households are unfamiliar with 4K technology, and thus unwilling to pay premium prices for technology offering scant content selection.
