San Diego Gas and Electric: Leveraging the connected home

Utilities and third parties with connected home platforms can cooperate in terms of the consumer energy management value chain -- just look at San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Alarm.com. From this partnership, many successes associated with partnering for home energy management have emerged.

In tomorrow's keynote address at the Smart Energy Summit, SDG&E and Alarm.com will share their innovative partnership solutions and business models, which demonstrate the potential for U.S. electric utilities to leverage a growing number of connected homes to achieve reductions in energy usage, increased energy efficiency, and mitigation of peak energy usage through demand response.

Parks Associates reports that consumer interest in energy-saving devices is increasing, provided the solutions are minimally invasive. To this end, Parks' Research shows nearly 50 percent of U.S. broadband households are very interested in a thermostat capable of automatic adjustments to save money.

The SDG&E/Alarm.com program is particularly noteworthy, as it leverages an already installed Alarm.com thermostat.
