Four million U.S. households are now using digital video cameras and
editing software every month to create movies at home, with roughly
750,000 doing so on a weekly basis, according to Parks Associates’
Global
Digital Living™.
This project, a multinational study of consumer technology trends,
found movie making is a growing niche market for technology products in
the U.S. Recent high-profile examples of homemade movies, including Star
Wars fan films and the theatrical release of My Date with Drew, should
further fuel interest in digital video and drive the purchase and use of
digital camcorders and video-editing software.

“Home filmmaking is somewhat akin to gaming,” said
John Barrett,
director of research for Parks Associates. “It requires a high-end
computer with a considerable amount of storage, memory, and processing
power. Apple is very strong in this market right now, but as it grows, I
expect we’ll see more efforts by Windows-based competitors to tap into the
demand.”
The
Global
Digital Living™ project is a study of worldwide consumer
technology trends. The project surveyed Internet households in thirteen
nations: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, India,
China, South Korea, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
