Fall Focus Leadership Roundtable, Opening
Presentation Address Personalized Services and Content for Consumers
Fall Focus: Making
Media Meaningful started today with an overview of the multimedia
landscape and the
Leadership Roundtable,
both of which focused on the current successes and future developments for
end-user digital content delivery. Parks Associates is hosting Fall Focus: Making
Media Meaningful on Nov. 9-11, 2005, at the Fairmont San Jose.
The opening presentation,
Snapshot: A Picture of the Media Landscape
(8:45 a.m., Nov. 10), presented by
Kurt Scherf, vice
president and principal analyst for Parks Associates, offered recent
consumer data from Parks Associates indicating upward trends for the
distribution, ownership, and usage of personalized content and services.
Among the key findings from the presentation are the following:
At present, U.S. consumers spend 9% of their movie
dollars per month on video-on-demand (VOD) services. Revenues from
premium VOD downloads from digital cable/IPTV subscribers will total
$530 million at year-end 2009.
At year-end 2004, the online distribution of PC
games accounted for 17% of the market; by year-end 2009, online
distribution will account for 50% of the market.
By the end of 2006, the worldwide digital music
market (not counting mobile) will account for 4.5% of all music sales.
Digital music revenues will grow at a 57% CAGR between 2005 and 2009.
Twenty percent of consumers in U.S. Internet
households state that that Internet-based advertising is the most
relevant to them on a daily basis. The Internet’s share of advertising
dollars will double between year-end 2004 and year-end 2009.
The
Leadership Roundtable, an interactive discussion between eight key
industry executives, tackled issues such as the challenge of engaging
consumers as the paradigm of content delivery shifts from “a one-way to a
two-way street.” The Roundtable participants emphasized relevance as
critical when providing content to consumers, whose expectations increase
when facing new technologies with previously unexplored personalization
options and controls.
Tricia Parks, President, Parks Associates, and
Mr. Scherf moderated
the Roundtable, which featured the following executives:
Beth Erez,
Vice President, Strategic Alliances, NDS
Barry James
Folsom, Corporate Vice President and General
Manager, Motorola Connected Home Solutions
David

Steve

“The Roundtable, replete with value
chain element leaders, sets the stage for the rest of our
event,”
Parks said. “As these markets evolve and technologies
converge, the companies that produce, package, and
distribute today’s content and related technologies need to
better understand their consumers in order to align their
services. Our goal at Parks Associates is to help already
smart companies advance their knowledge by bringing together
diverse executives for content and idea-rich discussions.”
