Online Entertainment Services Add More Value to the Bundle

Online entertainment services represent a critical component in a bundled-service package, according to Bundled Services: Analysis and Forecasts, a forthcoming report from Parks Associates. This report found bundled-service subscribers have outpaced the overall population of Internet households in adopting online entertainment services, which include gaming, music, and video. Furthermore, DSL broadband households with bundled services are more likely than similar cable broadband households to use an online entertainment service, with 63% of households using online gaming services and 56% using an online music service.

“Cost savings are definitely a powerful lure for bundled services, but service providers can also increase adoption by providing additional services to the bundle,” said William Cheek, an analyst for Parks Associates. “For this service model to succeed, service providers have to offer value on both fronts, through pricing and by incorporating advanced services such as online entertainment options.”

Among households subscribing to bundled services and broadband Internet access, 40% subscribe to an online gaming service, and 30% subscribe to an online music service, according to Bundled Services: Analysis and Forecasts.

“Nearly 20% of these households use an online video service, almost double the percentage of all U.S. Internet households,” Cheek said.

Bundled Services: Analysis and Forecasts examines the market for both three-tiered and four-tiered bundled service offerings from cable and telecom service providers. The report, to be released in November 2004, profiles current bundled-service subscribers, identifies households likely to subscribe to bundled services, and forecasts subscriber growth.
