Cellular Industry Failing to Connect with Consumers

Parks Associates’ latest white paper finds consumers want and will pay for new technologies and services; the industry simply has not yet offered compelling packages

Parks Associates released a white paper today on U.S. mobile phone users, Disconnected: Consumers and the Mobile Phone Industry, which offers a new perspective on the telecom industry’s woes.

“Many have blamed consumers for flat revenues and declining subscriber growth, claiming that demand is just not there, but we found the problem is the industry, not consumers,” said John Barrett, research analyst for Parks Associates. “Consumers want these services and will buy them. The industry simply has not yet gotten the packaging right.”

Some of the key findings of the paper include:

  • Significant demand exists for new multi-feature phones: More than 15% of likely mobile phone buyers also plan to purchase a PDA or MP3 player. More than 30% plan to purchase a digital camera.

  • Significant demand exists for new mobile services: More than 25% of mobile phone owners are interested in receiving burglar alarm alerts via their mobile phone, and 20% would pay a monthly fee of $5 for such a service.

  • Mobile phone subscribers are “earlier” adopters of technology: 40% of mobile phone users have a broadband connection, nearly 50% a digital camera, 18% a PDA, and 17% a home network.

“More than $60 billion was spent on networks and handsets in the last two years, but subscriber growth is still falling, and average revenues are flat,” Barrett said. “Our consumer research indicates that there is potential to rejuvenate the market if the right mix of marketing, pricing, and technology is applied.”
