RIAA Legal Campaign Against Music Piracy Having Mixed Results
Campaign Most Effective With Women
The RIAA legal campaign against music piracy has been only partially
effective among the broadband population, according to Parks Associates’
latest survey. In general, the campaign has deterred 46% of all households
from downloading music illegally off the Internet; however, the RIAA’s
efforts have struck a chord more with females than with males. One-half
(50%) of women surveyed said the threat of legal action has discouraged
them from downloading files illegally, compared with just 40% of men.
“Discouraging half of the population is a good start, but it shows that
the legal campaign has been only partially effective,” said
John Barrett,
a research analyst with Parks Associates. “There are many people,
particularly men, who do not believe pirating music will get them into
trouble, and with good reason. Given the difficulty in prosecuting such a
large segment of society, and the fact that some ISPs will not turn over
their subscriber names to the RIAA, there are several factors that
embolden these downloaders.”
