Entertainment-Enabled PCs Finding Their Way into
U.S. Living Rooms
Parks Associates’ new research suggests that a growing number of Internet
households are using media-enabled PCs in the same room as their home
entertainment systems.
January 22, 2003 – One-third of all U.S.
Internet households have a PC located in the same room as their primary home
entertainment system, according to Parks Associates’
Broadband
Access @ Home III, a survey of 10,500 U.S. Internet households.
Moreover, these “living room PCs” are well equipped to network content to
legacy home entertainment equipment.

“While it is widely acknowledged that a growing number
of Internet subscribers have a PC located in the same room as their primary
TV or home entertainment system, it is not so well known that these PCs are
themselves equipped with numerous entertainment-specific features,” says Michael Greeson,
Parks Associates. “In
other words, instead of waiting for consumers to buy ‘media-center’ PCs to
link PC-stored content to TVs and stereos, vendors should offer solutions
such as digital media adapters that leverage co-placement of these devices
right now.”
Parks Associates also found that almost two-thirds
(61%) of broadband homes with a PC collocated with their primary home
entertainment system have a home network in place.
Parks Associates’ latest consumer study,
Broadband
Access @ Home III, is the largest long-form Internet survey
conducted in the U.S. to date, with more than 10,500 Internet households
participating. The study includes surveys of 4,500 narrowband and 6,000
broadband households and offers statistically significant samples for most
residential services, including digital cable, satellite TV, Internet, home
networking, Internet telephony, home security, home management, and many
others.
