Home Networks to Connect 100+ Million Devices in Five Years

Parks Associates' study finds growth in PC and entertainment applications

The home networking market will grow to cover nearly 150 million installed nodes (connected devices) in U.S. households by the end of 2005, according to a new study by Parks Associates.

Networks in the Home: Analysis and Forecasts (Second Edition) also reveals that two distinct consumer applications - the need to link multiple PCs in the home and the desire for enhanced entertainment - will provide the impetus for the rise in interest for home networking. However, interest in these different home networking applications will not be consistent across multiple consumer segments.

"Previous forecasts and analyses of this market have tended to lump all applications together into one 'home networking' pot," said Kurt Scherf, vice president of research, and co-author of the report. "Given that we're looking at completely different products and applications as home networking moves forward, we find such analyses spurious. Therefore, we've separated two main drivers - PCs and entertainment - from each other to track growth separately."

Networks in the Home: Analysis and Forecasts (Second Edition) breaks the PC networking market into segments, including wired and "no-new-wires." According to this recent Parks Associates report, each of the main "no-new-wires" solutions will have their place in the home. "No one solution will reign supreme," Scherf noted. "We'll find that diffusion of networking solutions differs based on consumer needs, the type of equipment they desire to network, and the price point they are willing to pay."
