MIT Home of the Future Project Featured at Forum
Parks Associates' Forum
2001 is offering a unique view into the future integration of
architecture and home systems technology with a session dedicated to House_n,
the MIT Home of the Future project.
The session will take place on December
13, 2001, at Forum
2001: Leveraging Digital Opportunities, hosted by Parks Associates
at the Regent Las Vegas. Dr.
Kenneth Wacks, home systems consultant to House_n, will moderate
the session, which will feature Kent
Larson, director of House_n, and project sponsors Duane
Gauger, senior strategist for Proctor & Gamble; Don
Pelley, senior research engineer for Salt River Project; and Narendra
Srivatsa, program manager for International Paper.
"I view the research at the MIT Home of the Future as complementary
to corporate product development of home systems," Ken
Wacks explained. "Our industry needs the strategic focus of House_n
as we strive to revolutionize consumer products and the home
environment."
The MIT Home of the Future is planning to construct a prototype called
the Cambridge House, which will be a living laboratory for the development
of a connected home that adapts to its inhabitants. The house will be
constructed with a sophisticated frame for modular assembly of the building
and incorporation of moveable wall panels. This chassis will accommodate a
communications network, built-in sensors, displays, and networked
appliances.
The House_n project team will conduct research in the Cambridge
House that addresses a variety of problems in energy, health, and user
interfaces. A goal of House_n is to create an environment where the
house can be adapted to the occupants' changing needs in room layout and
home services, including the delivery of healthcare at home.
"Residential technologies are changing how we design and live in our
homes," said Tricia
Parks, president of Parks Associates. "The MIT Home of the Future
is making great strides in this arena. This panel will offer Forum
attendees a valuable look into the future of homebuilding and home design in
meeting the needs of particular market segments."
