Entertainment Connectivity
a Driver for Home Networks
A new report from Parks Associates reveals a growing enthusiasm among
consumers for solutions that fulfill the new "anywhere, anytime, any which way I want
it" paradigm for products and services.
Although the Internet is currently renown for e-mail and unified messaging as
"killer apps," consumer responses in
Networks @ Home: High-End
Entertainment Households show entertainment as a key component in driving the
adoption of new networking products. Although the concept and early implementations of
distributed video are embryonic, consumers lured by the ability to distribute signals from
DVD player or a VCR are prepared to seek solutions that extend the presence of
high-quality video and audio content at home.

More than 50% of all consumers surveyed in Parks Associates'
Networks @ Home: High-End
Entertainment Households expressed a strong interest in a whole-house video
networking solution. This option scored higher than a solution to network streaming audio,
of which 45% indicate high levels of interest, a surprising comparison because accessing
audio via the Internet is a more common application. Internet radio and streaming MP3s
have been popular with consumers, but their interest in multimedia connectivity reveals an
enthusiasm for future entertainment options that extend the value of both the Internet and
consumer electronics and services such as DVD players, VCRs, satellite systems, and cable.
"Everyone knows that linking PCs in a local area network at home is
the first logical step in advancing connectivity in the home," said
Kurt Scherf, vice
president of Research for Parks Associates. "What surprised us in this survey was the
extremely high levels of interest for not only entertainment-based networking and
streaming Internet content, but other advanced solutions for the home, such as intelligent
control."
"Entertainment content is no longer static in the minds of consumers," said
Tricia Parks, president of Parks Associates. "The Internet has introduced streaming
and downloadable audio and video, altering both the delivery and format of entertainment.
Consumers, as they start to understand the sheer breadth of their choices, do not want to
be confined to one room or one TV set. These consumers are starting to anticipate future
solutions and advanced entertainment options with a growing amount of optimism."
In addition to connectivity issues, this sizeable report contains details and analysis on
consumer responses in regard to:
-
High-end entertainment product purchase intentions
-
PC purchases/usage
-
Internet usage in an entertainment context
-
Non-PC Internet access
-
Attitudes regarding technology
