Reconciling the Vision with Reality: Tracking the Progress of Digital Multimedia in the Home

It is an enormous challenge to reconcile the grand visions of the technology industry with the reality of consumers' needs and wants. Along with unprecedented technological development in the digital multimedia space have come numerous prognostications about how soon we will witness “Digital Anytime/Anywhere.” But where do real opportunities begin to take form amid the hype and clamor that often veil real threats and stumbling blocks?

Kurt Scherf, Vice President of Research for Parks Associates, begins the Executive Seminar with an overview - supply-side and demand-side - of the digital home multimedia space in an opening keynote. Covering the current landscape and future opportunities, Scherf lays the groundwork for the day's proceedings.

8:45 AM - 9:15 AM
Visionary I Keynote
The Vision: Content Anywhere, Anytime

This keynote is one of four Visionary speeches that will present the promise and the dream for multimedia content and connectivity in the home.

The multimedia digital value chain begins with compelling content. This keynote highlights the opportunities (and the real challenges) associated with the delivery of content to the end user. From digital rights management to establishing appropriate partnerships with the “retail” face (i.e., the broadband service providers) to convincing consumers to pay for content they have long received for free, the challenges of building a business case for pay-per content are formidable. However, with a growing (and insatiable) consumer appetite for audio, video, and gaming content, real possibilities exist to build true markets. How will companies develop success-based solutions that matter to the end user?

9:15 AM - 10:15 AM
Reality I Panel Discussion:
Finding Success in Content Distribution

The vision for on-demand entertainment is quite compelling. However, the reality of deploying such services (and more importantly, building a realistic business model) in the real world is far more complicated. This panel discussion includes representatives from companies pushing the "on-demand envelope" who will share their success-based examples of turning bits into revenue.

Visionary II Keynote
The Vision: The Home Computer as a Multimedia Hub

This second keynote examines the market potential in extending the home computer's reach to include multimedia applications. The demand-side drivers are clear: consumers are already using home computers as "multimedia hubs" - downloading vast quantities of (questionably legal) audio and video content, sharing and organizing digital photos and videos, and using the home computer as a gaming platform. From this early start, what are the missing gaps in the digital value chain that will enable the home PC to take center stage as a whole-house media server? This keynote will address these and other critical issues from the perspective of the PC industry.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Reality II Panel Discussion
Fact or Fiction: The Home PC as a Multimedia Hub?

Has the PC industry’s entry into the home multimedia space signified a long-term shift in entertainment networks, or are computer-based solutions simply filling a vacuum until the CE industry catches up? This panel will include discussion and debate about such emerging solutions as media center PCs, digital media adapters/receivers, and the challenges of connecting computing platforms to audio and video platforms.

Connecting the Multimedia Dots: Which Networking Solutions Matter?

Often lost in the rancor and contention that accompanies the home networking “holy wars” are key factors in comparing connectivity solutions. How can the industry decide which solutions meet various performance requirements? Is the industry embracing a particular connectivity solution, or is it taking a "wait-and-see" approach? How exactly will the multimedia networks be created? This panel of players representing many facets of the home networking space will discuss and debate these issues in what is sure to be a lively and interactive setting.

Visionary III Keynote
The Vision: Connected CE as a Multimedia Hub

The consumer electronics industry stands at the threshold of a new opportunity for content distribution and connectivity in the home. Along with this promise, however, comes uncertainty about shifting platforms from proprietary to open solutions and skepticism about the promise of home networking as a panacea to the industry. In this keynote, an industry insider shares his thoughts and vision for how the CE industry needs to evolve to embrace the coming changes.

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Reality III Panel Discussion: How the CE Industry Becomes Connected

As the consumer electronics industry acknowledges and embraces home connectivity solutions, how will vendors design and develop the next-generation platforms? From silicon to middleware, which companies leading the way in providing cost-effective and scaleable components for the CE industry? This panel of solutions providers and CE vendors discusses and debates the best way for CE manufacturers to implement home networking solutions that make sense.

Visionary IV Keynote
The Vision: Mobile Platforms as Key Access Devices

Together with home computers and specialized consumer electronics platforms, mobile platforms - including telephones, handheld devices, smart displays, and remote controls - are positioned as key access devices. With the explosive growth of entertainment devices and content choices, however, there is a greater need by users for simplicity and integration. This keynote address examines the role of web services in integrating, improving, and managing the home multimedia experience.

Reality IV Panel Discussion:
“Hands-On” Entertainment: Making it Portable and Mobile

In many ways, the issues of portability and mobility for entertainment content are critical to widespread acceptance. After all, if consumers are capable of receiving content on-demand, logic dictates that they desire a user experience that is similarly flexible. This panel includes speakers from a diverse array of companies who will discuss the issue of mobile and portable entertainment. What lessons can be gleaned from the early rollout of mobile access, interface, and viewing platforms?
