Digital Lifestyles: Building the European and Global Business Cases


Roger Pitton brings more than 10 years of multimedia and TV experience to his current role as Program Director Microsoft’s TV, Video and Music Business. Currently, he is responsible for the Swisscom TV triple play deployment which was the first commercial Microsoft Corporation IPTV service in Europe launched in 2006.

Roger has extensive experience in IPTV, multimedia streaming and content distribution, IT systems and telecommunications deployment, operation and management. Most recently he has been responsible for multiple commercial IPTV deployments with Swisscom/Bluewin, all of them being the first global deployments of its kind. Within the IPTV domain, he has been extensively focusing on User Experience, Digital Video Recording, Audio/Video quality as well as interfacing with all the providers on the end to end TV delivery chain from acquisition to display on the end users device at home.

Prior to assuming his current position, Roger held various roles in the IT/Multimedia including IPTV Product Manager at Bluewin/Swisscom where he did launch the globally first services for IPTV/Mediaroom. Prior he held the position of a Director of Corporate Solutions for Content Distribution at The Fantastic Corporation.

Before this, he was working for Zurich Financial Services as well as Swissair/Atraxis in various roles.

Roger Pitton has spoken at various public events in the past, including IPTV World Forum (March 2007), Medienwoche Berlin-Brandenburg (2007), Rose d’Or in Luzern (May 2007), and IFA (August 2007).

Mitch Aramaki has been leading the promotion of the high definition powerline communications (HD-PLC) at Panasonic over seven yeas. He started his experience of Powerline communication with the technologies standardization activities in United States since 2002, during his assignment as a director of Panasonic R&D Center of North America. He also dedicated his efforts to the business creation via HD-PLC in cooperation with its alliance partners. Now he is a councilor of Panasonic Communications Co. Ltd., at the H.Q. in Japan. He keeps leading the technology standardization mainly in IEEE P1901 as the representative both Panasonic and HD-PLC Alliance. He is also contributing to deregulation and promotion as an operating member of PLC-J, which is the organization for the promotion of PLC solutions in Japan. Mitch is now focusing on the new market creation not only consumer digital home solution but also the eco solutions via HD-PLC under the concept of “Green Ubiquitous” solutions, which has been established as the goal of HD-PLC alliance.

Richard Bullwinkle joined Macrovision in January 2007 after Macrovision acquired Mediabolic, where he had served as vice president of Products and chief evangelist. Since that time Richard has served as Macrovision’s chief evangelist responsible for corporate strategy. In his role, Richard helps define the direction of the company‘s products and technology solutions. He represents Macrovision at numerous industry events to gather market perspectives and understand trends that have an impact on the company’s customers and the end consumer in order to provide recommendations to the senior team. He also works to establish standards and lead the discussions to promote a better consumer experience throughout the CE industry.

With roles at Mediabolic, Rio Audio, and TiVo, Richard is well known in consumer electronics and entertainment industries.

As vice president of Products and chief evangelist at Mediabolic, Richard helped pioneer the connected home strategy of connecting entertainment media devices. As a senior member of Rio Audio's product marketing team, Richard played an instrumental part in the creation of some of the most popular MP3 players in the US. At Tivo, Richard was the company’s chief evangelist and a senior member of TiVo's product marketing team. He helped create and develop the TiVo products and was behind the campaign to make the TiVo product a household name.

Richard graduated from Rollins College in Florida with degrees in English and Music.

Mark Cavicchia is the Founder and CEO of WhereverTV. Mark developed WhereverTV's core technology roadmap and the vision for delivering live feeds of international television channels, a la carte subscription services, and private channels available on the Internet directly to TV sets without the need for a personal computer or a centralized broadcast facility while he was living in Shanghai, China.

Mark has nineteen years experience developing and executing business strategies and developing consumer-oriented applications for clients including Tickets.com, Clinical Micro Sensors, Pacific Gas & Electric, Baskin-Robbins, and The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Prior to founding WhereverTV, Mark was Managing Director of Greater China for Everse Corporation, where he led software development efforts for Global 2000 clients. He also launched Shanghai’s first consumer portal focused exclusively on the local food and beverage industries – Shanghai Eats (and Drinks…).

Mark has been a keynote speaker and featured panelist at various CRM conferences, addressing the role that technology plays to enhance customer relationships and experiences. Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he was a Regents Scholar.

A digital media expert with the foresight to anticipate the global growth of digitally transmitted content, Mark W. Cutten has specialized in corporate strategy for new media - recently focusing on Broadband media with clients Fastweb (Italy) and France Telecom (France). His strategic foresight has allowed him to be an integral part of many firsts in the media industry:

Additionally, Mark held numerous management positions in operations, programming, production, marketing & sales and business development at such companies as HBO, Hughes Television Network, Inc., Television News, Inc., Sports Network, Inc. and NBC Nightly News.

Mr. Nicolas Decitre brings to Jungo many years of international sales and marketing position experience in the software, hardware (routers and STBs) and mobile telephone markets. Prior to his role as Jungo's general manager, Mr. Decitre held a vice president position at Thomson's Telecom Division managing the APAC sales and field operation including direct sales force, partner and reseller relations. Mr. Decitre also held a senior executive position at Alcatel mobile phone division responsible for key European operators accounts. Mr. Decitre holds a master of business administration.

Brian Donnelly has been managing sales and marketing teams for high technology companies for 16 years. Mr. Donnelly's innovative sales and marketing programs have helped Corinex Communications, Skillsoft, and Allan Crawford Associates achieve the #1 market share in their respective industries.

Mr. Donnelly is a recent addition to the Icron executive team that has substantial experience in the home connectivity space. In his most recent position as a member of Corinex Communications executive team, Mr. Donnelly helped build the company into the market leader in the Powerline communications industry through a 40 fold increase in sales in 4 years.

Mr. Donnelly was a former board member and Chairman of the Universal Powerline Association (UPA) and the previous Chairman of the UPA Marketing Working Group and a frequent invited speaker on access and home networking technologies. Donnelly holds an honours degree in Electrical Engineering from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.

ETSI is a leading ICT standards organization whose mission is to enable the emergence of global open standards for telecoms, broadcast and IT. The 700+ member companies design the work programme with their input and participation to technical committees. ETSI is located in Sophia Antipolis, France.

After holding various positions in the IT and banking industry, Margot Dor joined ETSI to launch a market intelligence unit. Since mid-06, she is working in the Director General team, in charge of strategic projects.

Margot was born and raised in Marseille (France). She graduated in Political Science and International Public Law and holds a Post-graduate Degree in strategic marketing.

With 13 years' pay TV experience at Pace and a champion for intellectual property, Paul Entwistle is a passionate believer in the strong and continuing evolution of the set-top box and the technologies that enable it.

Based on a philosophy that technology should be used but not seen, he has worked on the development of STBs for mass production through to advanced technologies pioneering the PVR in the late 90s and then on to the connected home and triple-play, working with both networking and VoIP technologies.

He has a growing portfolio of granted patents and his education includes a doctorate from the University of Wales.

Milan has 29 years of extensive experience in the field of IT and multimedia Communications networking and 20 years of extensive negotiation with commercial contracts with equipment vendors and operators. Milan has been working for number of international groups like Digital Equipment Corporation, Nortel Networks, Cisco Systems and now DS2 in a Technical Marketing, Strategy and Business Development role, with the additional responsibility for standards development in Europe. He has been invited to numerous International conferences as a Speaker on areas of home networking Standardization and technologies.

He has been involved in HGI, Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), ETSI, CENELEC, Euro-DOCSIS, EuroCableLabs and EuroPacketCable Forum. At European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), in 2002 he was one of the initiators for the creation and was a Chairman of the NGN@Home WG that is now split between ATTM where he is a TG Home Networking Chairman and TISPAN WG5 where he is a Vise Chair. He was involved in a Cenelec-SmartHouse project as a Home Residential Gateway Development Leader.

Gil joined Enure as an accomplished business leader, bringing to Enure experience in the management of rapidly growing enterprises. Before joining Enure, Gil was President and CEO at Fiberzone networks, where he provided the leadership for the company to become a key player in the Fiber Management Automation market. Prior to Fiberzone, Gil held position of EVP Sales and Marketing at Tdsoft Communications. Gil is Co-founder of innovative internet software start-ups Tradency BVI and vSpirits Technologies Ltd. During and upon completion of his B.Sc., Gil served as R&D project leader at the IBM Science and Technology Center. Gil holds a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering, Cum Laude (Technion, Haifa) and a Masters in Business Administration (Technion, Haifa).

Peter Galyas has a broad and comprehensive background in the telecommunications and IP communications industries. He has 20 years of experience in the industry, where he has experience from various positions from business development, product management, system development, software development, research, standardization to patents.

As CTO of Tilgin, Peter Galyas is responsible for the research and standardization activities, which spans over several organizations, such as Broadband Forum, ETSI/TISPAN and HGI. He is deeply involved himself with the work within HGI, where he is also a member of the Board.

Previously, Peter Galyas worked at Ericsson, where he did groundbreaking work developing the market's first global system for mobile communications base station and inventing a new IP-based system architecture for mobile access networks.

Peter Galyas is a frequent speaker in industry conferences, including VoIP World Forum (Sept 2006), Broadband World Forum (Oct 2006, 2007), IPTV World Forum (March 2008), Sofnet (April 2008). He has also been a speaker in two Light Reading webinars and authored various publications and whitepapers.

Patrick Gauthier has more than 20 years of global sales, product development, product marketing, and strategic planning experience in the payment services, smart card technology and semiconductor equipment industries.

Prior to joining ZillionTV, Patrick spent ten years in senior leadership roles at Visa where he most recently managed corporate venture investments.

Previously, Patrick was senior vice president of Visa International’s Innovation group, managing multiple strategic innovation initiatives in key disruptive areas including mobile payments, identity and authentication, and data security.

Patrick was also senior vice president of emerging products development for Visa. In this position, he rolled out major programs in the U.S. in the area of loyalty as well as contactless payments with strategic partners including Target and Chase. Patrick also managed key technology partnerships and intellectual property activities.

Patrick started at Visa as vice president of smart card products, responsible for developing the “smart Visa” product platform, an end-to-end solution for secure payment, Internet authentication and electronic rewards.

Patrick has served on the Board of a number of industry organizations – such as the Smart Car dAlliances – and various global, venture-backed companies including Inside Contactless, mTLD and mFormation.

Patrick holds a master’s degree in Engineering (with an emphasis in Telecommunications and Computer Science) from the Institut national des Télécommunications in Paris, France. Residing in Mountain View, California with his wife and three children, Patrick enjoys watching British mystery and comedy shows, classic thrillers and any form of science fiction.

Stefan is the CEO of moreTV Broadcasting GmbH and the former Head of Business Innovation at Siemens Communication.

For Siemens Communications, Stefan was heading a Business Innovation Think Tank which he sometimes refers to as the “Future Business Laboratory” or “playground”. The main task of this organization was to analyze and pilot innovative products and business models, thereby securing future business.

Later, Stefan was Partner at trommsdorff + drüner innovation + marketing consultants, consulting on strategies of business innovation, new product development and innovation marketing.

Today, Stefan is CEO of moreTV Broadcasting GmbH. moreTV is market leader for TV-based Services in Germany and realizes with partners innovative TV-centric services and applications on digital video recorders (PVRs).

Stefan has authored and edited various scientific publications about the effect of digital technologies on innovation and the future of media. He is teaching business innovation at various universities.

Art Lancaster co-founded Affinegy in March 2003 and has served as CTO since, where he is responsible for technology strategy and product development. Affinegy provides unique software solutions that have been architected to easily connect, secure and manage Digital Lifestyle Networks. Spanning – for the first time – both emerging devices and previously installed, networking gear in the consumer home. Affinegy software has been deployed by some of the world’s largest broadband service providers, who use our solutions to deliver “it just works” Digital Lifestyle experiences to their end customers. Prior to Affinegy Art was director of strategy and business development for Motorola's Streamaster business where Art established strategies leading to the world's most advanced interactive broadband gateway system. He has a BSEE, cum laude, from the University of Missouri, an MSEE from the University of Southern California, and an MBA from the University of Texas.

Ulrich Leiner is heading the department „Interactive Media and Human Factors“ at Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications (Heinrich-Hertz-Institut) in Berlin. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Technologies in Munich. He started as a research scientist at Siemens Corporate Technology working on User Experience topics including GUI, Multimodality, Usability and Ergonomics. At Siemens Mobile and BenQ he managed the user experience department for mobile and fixed network devices. Joining Fraunhofer in 2007, he is now leading a team at Fraunhofer HHI, that is focused on 3D-Display technologies, touchless interaction systems and multimedia retrieval.

Anton has more than 15 years of experience in communication systems research and development. He is responsible for new technology, standards activities and patents at Entropic. Previously, he led the engineering development of Entropic's coax-based multimedia networking chipset development. Prior to co-founding Entropic, he led physical layer system design and IC verification for several Conexant product lines, including cable modems and fixed wireless access. He was also responsible for standards development in these areas and for business development and partnering in the fixed wireless arena. Before Conexant, Dr. Monk was involved in the development of cable and satellite ICs at ComStream Corporation, and performed communication system research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA. Dr. Monk holds a B.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

Trond Neergaard is responsible for global sales, the company’s EMEA endeavors, and driving business growth. He brings 24 years of experience in sales, channel development, marketing and management. Most recently he held the position of Vice-President of the ISP business at F-Secure Corporation where he lead all aspects of F-Secure’s global ISP business. He brings executive strengths in sales and business management, global telecom and software experience, and a proven track record of delivering business results.

Randolph Nikutta started his career at Deutsche Telekom in 1996 at a R&D subsidiary, defining and leading several larger business oriented R&D projects (value added services & service delivery platforms) for several business units of the Deutsche Telekom Group. Between 2002 and 2008 Dr. Nikutta has been working for Detecon International GmbH which is a consultancy subsidiary of T-Systems International belonging to Deutsche Telekom Group. Among other numerous projects he has supported the fixed network business unit in the development of its product and service innovation strategy and portfolio. Since April 2005 Dr. Nikutta has been assigned to Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and is responsible there for the project field “New Media” dealing with TV related topics like interactive IPTV, targeted IPTV advertisement, P2P TV, smart EPG, interactive mobile TV, Free Viewpoint TV, semantic enabled search for entertainment domains etc. In April 2008 he joined Deutsche Telekom Laboratories on a permanent basis.

Frederic Onado, 36, is Vice President EMEA of HomePlug Powerline Alliance, an industry-led initiative established to create specifications for home high-speed powerline networking products and command & control among platforms within the home, and broadband access services to the home.

Frederic is also COO of SPiDCOM Technologies, a fabless semi-conductor company which specializes in high-speed PLC (Powerline Communication) chips & Linux based software bundles.

Eric Plesner is in charge of management and business development for the io-homecontrol association. Eric has a lifelong career within Information Technology and complex software systems. He has held positions as CEO within Management Consulting and as CIO in large international corporations. Eric has developed strategies for io-homecontrol® on business development, effective procurement of solutions to new members (short time-to-market) and also a strategy to provide remote access and services to the home. Eric has designed the general strategy for io-homecontrol® that invites building component manufacturers with strong market positions and a desire to apply advanced control systems to their products to join io-homecontrol®.

As vice president of marketing at Valens, Micha Risling brings 12 years of expertise in marketing and R&D executive roles in established NASDAQ and startup companies, plus vast experience in the global mobile and telecommunications industry.

Previously, Micha was director of marketing and strategy at Saifun Semiconductor, Israel (acquired by Spansion), a leading provider of intellectual property (IP) solutions for the non-volatile memory (NVM) market. He led a group of internal and external teams to define and execute the company’s long-term strategy for business and marketing. Prior to that, he was director of the mobile division product strategy at M-Systems, Israel (acquired by SanDisk), a world leader in flash memory addressing the mobile, portable and embedded markets. Micha also previously served as director of technical customer integration at M-Systems, managing a group of technical experts (System/HW/SW) responsible for the integration of M-Systems’ products at leading mobile handset manufacturers, such as Nokia, HTC, Motorola, Samsung and Sony. Prior to that, he was a senior VLSI engineer at semiconductor companies OptiX Networks, Conexant and LSI Logic.

Micha received an executive MBA from the Kellogg School of Business through Northwestern University in Chicago and the Recanati Business School at Tel Aviv University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Tel Aviv University.

Bill Stanley is the Director of Home Network Assurance for Telcordia Technologies. He has over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, including product line management, solutions development and alliances/partnering. In his present role, Bill is leading the development of solutions that Telcordia brings to communications service providers to assist them with their network evolution strategies by leveraging their legacy investments toward new networks and new services. Bill has participated in numerous TM Forum projects including early development of the SID model plus the formulation and delivery of Catalyst showcase projects. Bill began his career with the management of network deployment projects throughout North America and the Asia/Pacific region and in recent years has remained involved in international markets including Europe and Latin America.

Matt is a technology strategist focused on wired home networking and works out of the Digital Home Group. In this capacity, he is tasked with defining Intel’s wired home networking strategy and tactical plan. Matt also acts as President of the HomeGrid Forum, a global non-profit group promoting the International Telecommunications Union’s G.hn standardization efforts for next generation home networking. Over the last 10 years at Intel, Matt has held various senior roles driving technology initiatives and managing silicon businesses. In addition to currently acting as the President of the HomeGrid Forum, Matt has also acted as Director, PCI Express Programs where he was co-lead of the Intel PCI Express marketing and ecosystem development team; Technology Initiative Manager for the Advanced Switching initiative; Director, I/O Translator Operation where he managed a business which delivered silicon products bridging different types of I/O; Director, PCI-PCI Bridge Product Operation which had #1 market segment share in the industry. Prior to joining Intel, Matt also held marketing and sales management and engineering positions at Digital Equipment Corp and several start-ups. Matt holds a BSME from Northeastern University and an MBA from Rivier College.

Navin Varsani has more than 18 years of business development, sales, marketing, applications and electronic design experience with semiconductor, EDA and software companies. An expert at solving customers' business problems with the right technology approach, Varsani serves as Consumer Director, EMEA at Cloakware. He is responsible for building and managing Cloakware's Consumer Program, and working with a variety of Operators, OEMs and security partners.

Having joined EchoStar Europe to drive its IPTV business development and sales strategy, Ian’s remit recently expanded to cover all elements of business-to-business commercial activity. With over 17 years experience in the digital television industry, Ian has occupied a number of senior commercial and operational positions both in the content management and delivery and technology sectors.

Prior to joining EchoStar Europe, Ian was VP New Business Development at Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) where he successfully led the company’s IPTV strategy, establishing ADB as a major supplier of IPTV and hybrid set-top boxes. During this time he built an extensive customer base of leading telecommunications and broadband operators and was also influential in securing several industry awards for the company’s IPTV technology.

Earlier in his career Ian worked with NDS before moving to TANDBERG Television - which had acquired NDS’s digital broadcast business – where he handled a number of high-profile, key-accounts in the Broadcast and Broadband Contribution & Distribution sector.

Ian had earlier represented Pace Micro Technology as New Business Development Manager with responsibility for securing new business with European satellite television operators. He began his digital TV career with Thorn Europe where he secured major, multi-territory contracts to supply Pay-TV services to the global hospitality market, subsequently adding the management of Thorn’s Pay-TV operations to his commercial responsibilities.

Stuart Sikes is the president of Parks Associates and is responsible for providing Parks Associates’ clients with a business relationship that complements their strategic marketing activities.

Stuart has served technology companies for over twenty years, designing technical service, software, and hardware solutions for companies ranging from global semiconductor manufacturers to one of the nation’s largest airlines. In his positions with companies including AT&T, NCR, OpenConnect Systems, and Intelligraphics, Stuart’s roles have included sales, product marketing, marketing communications, and executive management.

Stuart and the Parks Associates’ team have worked closely with the world’s leading semiconductor, software, telecom equipment, and entertainment companies, assisting these companies with their understanding of consumer adoption of new technologies.

Stuart holds an MBA from SMU with a concentration in strategic marketing and a BA in economics from Vanderbilt University.

Kurt Scherf studies developments in home networks, residential gateways, digital entertainment, technology development in the housing market, and residential and building management and controls. Kurt is the sole author or contributing author/analyst to more than 60 research reports and studies produced by Parks Associates since 1998.

Kurt joined Parks Associates following a career in political research and multi-tenant dwelling management. He earned his BA from The University of Iowa.
