Aug 22, 2017Parks Associates: 27% of U.S. consumers with a chronic condition want a monitoring device that tracks their health conditionFourth-annual Connected Health Summit to address impact of smart home solutions on digital health Parks Associates today announced new digital health research showing more than one-fourth of consumers in U.S. broadband households with a chronic condition want a device that tracks their health condition. The research firm warns that, despite this strong early interest, current adopters are reporting difficulties using these connected devices. Among U.S. broadband households that have a glucometer that works with a smartphone app, 40% of these early adopters find it difficult to use this device. The firm’s 360 View: Empowering Healthcare Consumers also reports that 20% of owners find it very difficult to operate connected glucometers and pill boxes. “Nearly one-half of type I diabetics and one-third of type II diabetics are interested in health monitoring devices such as glucometers, but a steep learning curve and difficult or counterintuitive directions could inhibit their usage of these devices and also prevent them from buying other connected health devices,” said Harry Wang, Senior Director of Research, Parks Associates. “Device and application manufacturers would benefit from improving the ease-of-use of these devices.”
Parks Associates will address the impact of smart home solutions on the digital health industry with multiple sessions at the fourth-annual Connected Health Summit: Engaging Consumers, August 29-31 in San Diego. The event will address business strategies and consumer demand regarding connected health and virtual care. Wang will moderate the session “Fireside Chat: Consumer Aging Journey and Business Opportunities,” 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30. In the session, industry veterans will discuss the aging needs of seniors and boomers as they enter a new life stage and address challenges from quality of life to chronic diseases. Speakers will also examine solution and service opportunities that will help families cope with this aging-in-place journey. Joining Wang on the panel are the following speakers:
Brad Russell, Senior Analyst at Parks Associates, will moderate the session “Reinventing Healthcare through Smart Home Solutions,” 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 31. The panel explores the next innovations in the home health market and strategies for home health agencies and professional caregivers to work with patients and their family caregivers to deliver services that can truly impact care outcomes. The session includes the following speakers:
"The U.S. spends almost $90 billion each year on home health, but home health spending accounts for only 3% of total healthcare spending,” Russell said. “All signs point to increased spending in this category as care delivery continues to shift from high-cost institutional care to low-cost home care.” Event sponsors include Independa, iQor, Reemo Health, AARP, Alarm.com, BodiMetrics, Macadamian, mPulse Mobile, PokitDok, ULE Alliance, Vivify Health, Z-Wave, California HealthCare Foundation, Best Buy, LivingWell@Home, Rapid Response Monitoring, Sidebench, Freeus, and MobileHelp Healthcare.
