Mick McManus,
President and CEO, MAYA Design |
|
 |
Mick McManus is president and CEO of MAYA
Design, Inc., a technology design lab and consultancy that
specializes in making complex technology easier to use.
However, he prefers to think of himself as MAYA’s chief mad
scientist. Since joining MAYA in 2001, Mick has led a highly
skilled, interdisciplinary team that creates innovative ways
to integrate information and technology into a satisfying
user experience.
In 2005, Mick spearheaded the launch of
MAYA's Pervasive Computing Practice, which focuses on ways
to design information objects so that all sorts of data can
flow easily among vastly distributed devices, many hidden in
the environment. This "information liquidity" will empower
consumers to gain access to information through
ever-increasing types of devices––without frustration from
technology constraints.
At age 12, Mick careened through the
hallways of his school on a vacuum-cleaner-powered
hovercraft (really) that would later get him the coveted
eighth-grade science fair grand prize d'Or. While attending
the University of Illinois in Chicago, he discovered that a
bachelor's degree of mad science was not yet available. He
settled for graduating with honors from the School of Art
and Architecture with a BFA in industrial design and
extended studies in communication design and mathematics.
Before Mick stumbled upon MAYAn culture,
he was co-founder and senior vice president of creative
vision and strategy at Elan Communications, an integrated
communications consultancy for clients that included Bristol
Myers Squibb, MasterCard, Samsung, Nortel Networks, TiVO,
and Janssen Pharmaceutica.
At Elan, Mick built the creative team
that managed the concept, design, and production of the
Samsung Electronics pavilion at the 2000 Summer Olympics in
Sydney, Australia. The wireless telecommunications
rendezvous became a destination for more than a million
visitors and was listed as one of the top ten destinations
during the games.
For Janssen, Mick's creative team
designed a virtual world where practitioners could
experience the symptoms of schizophrenia and become educated
on the impact of the disease. This virtual world was
featured on "20/20" with Barbara Walters.
Mick's numerous design awards include a
CES award for innovation in the Integrated Home Systems
category, two Addy Awards for advertising and video
production, the AIGA Communications Show Judge's Choice
Award, SuperComm 2000 Best of Show in Design, and the
Exhibitor Award for Best Conceptual Design. His articles and
work have been published in Innovations, Graphis,
and Space magazines.
Mick has lectured on experience design
for the Industrial Designers Society of America at its
national convention and at the New Millennium Seminar at the
International Design School for Advanced Studies in Seoul,
Korea. In addition, he was a keynote speaker at the 2005 M2M
(Machine to Machine) conferences in Dallas, Texas, and
Amsterdam. |

Stefan Roever, CEO, Navio Systems |
|
 |
Navio founder and CEO Stefan Roever has
never been one to shy away from tackling big issues.
Before even graduating from high school
in Germany, Stefan was writing educational software for IBM.
While still enrolled at University of Tübingen, Stefan
founded his first technology venture, which ultimately
helped to fund Brokat Technologies.
As CEO of Brokat, Stefan began with a
five-person operation and grew the company into a leading
provider of Internet banking software and infrastructure for
wireless applications. Brokat employed 1,400 employees in 17
countries. Stefan took Brokat public in 1998 on Neuer Markt,
the technology sector of the Frankfurt stock exchange, and
on the NASDAQ in 2000.
During a critical period in the growth of
international e-commerce, Brokat devised and delivered the
only practical way for banking institutions to offer secure
Internet transactions outside of the U.S. In helping to
remove ineffective U.S. trade restrictions on encryption
technology, Stefan became a leading authority on electronic
commerce and security.
Between 1999 and 2001, Stefan was named
“Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum, testified
as an industry expert before an advisory council to the
Clinton Presidential Administration on encryption policy
issues, was named to Time Magazine’s “Digital 25
A-Lists,” was appointed to the German Federal Monopoly and
Deregulation Commission, and was named “Entrepreneur of the
Year” by Ernst & Young.
Stefan founded Navio Systems, Inc. in
2002. The Navio challenge is equally ambitious: creating an
e-commerce platform for the transaction of digital content
based on rights, not files. Rights-based commerce is the
revolutionary idea that traditional economic notions of
physical ownership are inadequate when that content is in
digital form. |
