Opening Keynote: Convergence, Chaos and Consumers
John Sculley,
former CEO of Apple & Pepsi-Cola Company; Board Member, OpenPeak Inc.;
Co-Founder and Chairman, Qbit LLC
Dan Gittleman, Chairman and CEO, OpenPeak Inc.
The long-awaited convergence of consumer electronics and
personal computers is finally arriving in the mass market, and
numerous players – both large and small, hardware and software –
are rapidly introducing new products and services that seek to
leverage this convergence. During this keynote, John Sculley and
Dan Gittleman will discuss how this convergence is accelerated by
several powerful trends (including affordable home networking,
pervasive broadband adoption and the availability of compelling
digital media content). While these trends enable a host of new
converged media experiences, they also threaten to create chaos
for consumers. To address the challenges, Sculley and Gittleman
will offer a broad, achievable vision of a digital home that
exploits these trends while converting complexity and differing
approaches into seamless, interoperable simplicity for consumers.

9:00 a.m. Plenary Session: Reliability, Security and
Interoperability
By 2009, more than 14 billion devices will need to
connect to each other and to enterprise applications.
Today, most companies use a device development model that
is inefficient and insufficient. Developers struggle
in-house with a mix of different silicon architectures,
operating systems, middleware, and development tools. Add
to this the lack of an industry standard Linux
distribution for the Device Software Optimization market
that has slowed adoption of Linux technology and made it
difficult for this segment to fully harness the power of
open source.
In this presentation, Wind River and Red Hat will
describe how through their recently formed partnership,
the co-existence of open-source and commercial systems
will enable a new software model that will allow CE
manufacturers to increase the reliability, security. and
interoperability of the device software production
environment.

Reaching Consumers: The Marketing of Digital Convergence
We have faced a paradigm shift in marketing convergent
technology to consumers. No longer are technology consumers
focused solely on single function equipment purchases. By cross
categories marketing to consumers, we're expanding the
traditional retail strategy of marketing to a specific consumer
segment, yet have to balance personalization, competitiveness,
and a mass marketing message.

Content Distribution in the Digital World
Greg Gudorf

Digital Platform Division Of America
Sony Electronics Inc.
Greg Gudorf, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’
Digital Platform Division of America, will address the
development of the digital living room as driven by the
advancement and acceleration of high-definition
television.
Gudorf will discuss how HDTV is the driving force of
the digital living room via content, hardware and
distribution through cable and satellite companies and at
the retail level. Companies that might not have worked
together in the past now have new business partnership
options through HDTV. Sony Electronics, for example,
recently engaged in a partnership with Cox Communications
and the San Diego Padres to equip San Diego’s new PETCO
Park with HDTVs and to market cutting-edge high-definition
technology and equipment to consumers and businesses.
