The profitability of legacy infrastructures continues to
decline as traditional “cash cow” services become commodities differentiated
mainly by price. Increasingly, this trend is extending into the broadband
realm, where narrowing margins for raw transport and Internet access
services exacerbate the “profit squeeze.”
Service providers seek to combat this commoditization by leveraging
their existing backbone network assets in new ways. By finding cost-effective
ways to “add value to packets” (i.e., to deliver higher-margin IP
services) – including data, voice, and video services – companies
can attract and retain a lucrative customer base.
This session looks at technologies that turn the promise of IP into
reality, discusses the prime markets for such services, and provides
a roadmap for future service provisioning.
