Brett Sappington, director of research at Parks Associates, has closely tracked STB development in coordination with the growing availability of OTT programming. He points out that the most successful STBs are those that capitalize on content.

“The way that Roku is planning to stay in the market for the long term is by doing content deals,” Sappington says. “Roku makes its money off partner deals and revenue sharing,” which is why, he says, the company tried so hard to “beat down the coast of hardware” for its basic model.
