Parks: 23% Of US Millennials Opt For OTT-Only

In the US, some 23% of millennial heads of household opt to live in OTT-only, broadband homes, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm said the figure compares to a national average of just 15% of all broadband households that only choose over-the-top entertainment access.

Roku Still Most Popular Streaming Media Player

Roku is still the most popular streaming media player in the US, accounting for 30% of players sold in the year to March, according to figures compiled by Parks Associates.

According to the research unveiled this week at INTX, Amazon is now running in equal second place with Google, each with 22% of the market, followed by Apple with a 20% share. Together the big four providers of streaming media devices account for 94% of the market, up from 86% in 2014.

One In Six US Broadband Homes Take An OTT Sports Service

Some 16% of US broadband households now subscribe to an over-the-top sports video service, according to Parks Associates.

The NFL Game Pass is the most widely adopted service, with 6% of US broadband homes subscribing to this compared to 4% for the WWE Network and baseball service MLB.TV.

Top Three Dominate As US OTT Churn Edges Upwards

About 20% of US broadband homes had cancelled at least one OTT service in the last 12 months at the end of 2015, according to data from Parks Associates. Netflix has the lowest churn among US OTT services, with 5% of broadband households cancelling the service over the 12 months.

European OTT Video Use On The Up, Still Trails North America

Over-the-top (OTT) video usage in Western Europe continues to grow, but still trails North America – particularly for subscription video on-demand (SVOD) uptake – according to Parks Associates.

The research firm’s OTT Video Market Tracker report claims that 55% of UK broadband households and 51% of French internet homes watch TV programmes and movies online, compared to 70% in the US.

Two Thirds of US Web Homes Watch TV While Using Second-Screen

Some 65% of US broadband households engage in at least one “second-second screen activity” per month while watching TV, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm said that the most popular second screen activity – done from a smartphone, tablet or laptop – is searching for information about a programme that’s being watched.

One In Six Spanish Pay TV Homes Subscribed For The First Time In 2015

“The Spanish pay TV market in general has a very active, cost-conscious base of subscribers, with higher-than-average rates of downgrades and upgrades and a substantial population of cord-nevers,” said Parks Associates research director, Brett Sappington.
